With the Write Session Summary capture method, you can generate a Progress Note by typing a brief session summary directly into Blueprint -- no audio recording required. Blueprint will then convert your rough notes into a structured clinical Progress Note. All standard Blueprint features, including Magic Edit, remain fully accessible.
Writing a session summary is just one of the ways you can create Progress Notes in Blueprint, alongside:
Recording the session live via Blueprint
Dictating a brief session summary
Uploading session audio recorded outside of Blueprint
Writing the Progress Note yourself from scratch
When to use the "Write Session Summary" capture method
Use the Write session summary capture method can be used anytime you want to generate a Progress Note via written text instead of recording audio, such as when:
The client didn’t consent to recording
You forgot to start recording or ran into technical issues
The session happened over a phone call or walk-and-talk
You already have notes or a transcript you want to paste in
You prefer typing about the session over speaking about the session
💡 Tip: Prefer to give Blueprint a verbal summary of the session instead of writing one out? You can do so with our Dictate Session Summary capture method!
How to generate a Progress Note based on written text
Start a new session by clicking + New Session button anywhere within Blueprint
Select Write session summary from the session capture options
Select the client
In the scratchpad that appears, type or paste your session notes -- this can be rough notes, bullet points, a transcript pasted from another tool, or a free-form summary
Once you've written at least 30 words, click End session
Confirm the session details, then click Generate note
Once the note generates, update the session details in the left sidebar to reflect when the session actually took place
Review your generated Progress Note, make any necessary edits, then click Sign & Lock
Good to know
You can type or paste whatever you have into the scratchpad -- rough notes, bullet points, a free-form summary, or a transcript copied from another tool
The minimum is 30 words -- more detail generally means a more accurate Progress Note, but loose and scrappy works too
Once the Progress Note generates, all standard Blueprint features remain available, including Magic Edit
The date, time, duration, and setting initially shown on the generated Progress Note will default to when you created the session -- update these details in the left sidebar to reflect when the session actually took place
Not sure where to start? Try answering a few of these:
What were the presenting issues and main topics?
What was the client's emotional state, symptoms, or behavior?
What goals are you working toward, and what progress was made?
What interventions did you use? Any specific EBPs?
Any safety or risk concerns?
What's the plan for next session?
