Brief Description

The Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire-Revised (CPAQ-R) is a reliable and valid self-report instrument designed to assess the degree to which individuals with chronic pain accept their pain rather than attempting to control or avoid it. When an individual has greater acceptance of chronic pain, they are believed to make fewer unsuccessful attempts to avoid or control the pain, allowing them to focus more on engaging in valued activities and pursuing meaningful goals. The CPAQ-R measures two key factors: Activity Engagement, which reflects the extent to which a person continues to engage in life activities despite pain, and Pain Willingness, which captures the degree of willingness to experience pain without attempting to reduce or avoid it.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The CPAQ-R includes assessing two subscales associated with pain acceptance:

  1. Activity Engagement: The pursuit of life activities regardless of pain. Assessed in items 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, and 19.

  2. Pain Willingness: The recognition that avoidance and control are often ineffective strategies for adapting to chronic pain. Assessed in items 4, 7, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, and 20.

Each item is rated on a 7-point scale, ranging from 0 ("Never true") to 6 ("Always true"). To score the CPAQ-R, sum the items corresponding to Activity Engagement and Pain Willingness to obtain a score for each subscale. The total score is the sum of these two subscale scores. Higher scores indicate higher levels of pain acceptance.
