Brief Description

The Overall Depression Severity and Impairment Scale (ODSIS) is a brief measure of severity, frequency, and impairment related to symptoms of depression. The measure can be used across mood disorders and for those with subthreshold symptoms of depression. The ODSIS is useful for screening for depressive symptoms as well as monitoring symptom severity during treatment. Respondents rate the severity and impairment of depressive symptoms during the past week on a scale of 0 to 4, with each response option providing detailed descriptions of severity and impairment associated with symptoms.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The ODSIS contains 5 items that are scored on a 5-point Likert scale from 0 (lowest severity and impairment) to 4 (highest severity and impairment). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses, with higher scores being associated with more severe and more impairing depressive symptoms.

As recommended by Bentley and colleagues (2014), the Blueprint ODSIS measure uses the cut-off score of 8, meaning that a total score of 8 or more suggests significant symptoms of depression.

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated completion time: 2-5 minutes

  • There is evidence of reliability in validity among Western and non-Western samples, including outpatient populations, college students, and community samples.
